Which method to use
A quick clip for a chat or a bug report. Win + Shift + R on Windows 11. Drag, record, done, and the file is on your disk. On Windows 10, Win + Alt + R inside the app.
Gameplay or one app with system audio. Xbox Game Bar. It was built for games, records the active window with the game audio, and keeps a rolling background buffer if you turn that on.
A long recording or a stream. OBS Studio. No cap on length, any number of sources, every encoder setting, and it streams. It records raw video and leaves the editing to you.
A tutorial or a demo you will publish. Rapidemo. The zoom, the cursor, the subtitles and the camera framing are the difference between a capture and a video, and Rapidemo adds them while you record.
The limits of the built-in tools
Both built-in recorders capture raw video, so every cursor wobble and pause stays in. Neither records your camera. Neither adds zoom or subtitles. Game Bar records one monitor and refuses the desktop. The Snipping Tool’s video mode is Windows 11 only. If you hit any of those, the next three sections are for you.
Record system audio and your microphone
Game Bar: press Win + G, open the capture widget and set Audio to record. “All” captures every system sound; “Game only” captures the app you are recording; “None” records no system audio. The microphone is a separate toggle on the same widget. Levels per source live in Settings > Gaming > Captures.
Snipping Tool: the microphone and system audio toggles sit on the recording toolbar before you press Start.
Rapidemo: the recorder lists your microphone and the system audio device next to the screen source. Both record to separate tracks, so you can lower the system audio under your voice afterwards. See system audio and camera and microphone.
Record your camera too
The built-in tools record the screen only. Clipchamp records the camera and screen together into one clip. OBS adds the camera as a source you position by hand. Rapidemo records the camera on its own track and places it in an overlay bubble that shrinks during zooms, a split screen, or a 3D scene, and you can move it after recording.
Make the recording look good
A published recording needs four things a raw capture lacks: a zoom when something small matters, a cursor that glides, subtitles for people watching without sound, and a frame that does not look like a screenshot. Rapidemo adds all four automatically. The how-tos on zooming in on a screen recording and making screen recordings look professional walk through the details.
Guides for your laptop brand
The shortcuts are the same on every Windows laptop; the function-key behavior and the preinstalled utilities are not. Each guide covers what is different: HP, Dell, Lenovo, ThinkPad, Acer, ASUS, Surface, Samsung Galaxy Book and MSI.
Recording a specific app
Some apps bring their own recorder, with their own rules about who may press Record and where the file goes: PowerPoint, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Google Slides and webinars on any platform.
