Bandicam vs OBS Studio

Bandicam and OBS Studio are the two names Windows users hear first for gameplay and tutorial recording. OBS is free, open source and streams. Bandicam costs a one-time fee, is simpler to set up, and since September 2026 adds click-based zoom after recording. Both record raw video well. Neither polishes a demo for you.

Bandicam covers 6 of 16, OBS Studio covers 4 of 16 categories in this comparison.

When Bandicam is the better fit

  • You want a recorder that works in a minute with no scene or source setup.
  • You record gameplay or a single app and want hardware-accelerated capture with a one-time license.
  • You want click-based zoom applied after recording; Bandicam’s Smart Zoom does that.
  • You can live with the free version’s five-minute cap until you buy.

When OBS Studio is the better fit

  • You stream to Twitch, YouTube or anywhere else; OBS is the standard.
  • You want no limits on length, resolution or price, ever.
  • You want full control over scenes, sources, audio tracks and encoders.
  • You edit in a separate application anyway.

The Rapidemo logo The third option: Rapidemo Our pick

Both tools give you a raw file. For gameplay that is the whole job. For a product demo or a tutorial, the raw file is where the work starts: zooms, cursor cleanup, subtitles, a frame. Rapidemo does that part while you record on Windows 10 and 11, with a camera overlay, backgrounds and exports up to 4K, and no scene setup. If you stream, keep OBS. If you publish screen videos, try Rapidemo.

Free to record and edit. License unlocks export.

Recording

Bandicam records the screen, a rectangle, a game through DirectX or OpenGL, or a device, with hardware encoding and a built-in player.

OBS Studio composes scenes from any number of sources, records and streams them, and writes MP4, MOV or MKV.

Both capture system audio and a microphone, and both run on Windows; OBS also runs on Mac and Linux.

Editing

Bandicam has a light editor and, since September 2026, Smart Zoom: click-based zoom applied in the editor with smooth motion. OBS has no editor.

For both, subtitles, cursor cleanup and a camera layout happen elsewhere.

Limits and price

Bandicam’s free version caps recordings at five minutes and watermarks edited exports; the paid license is one-time. OBS has no limits and no price.

Streaming

OBS Studio is the reference tool for live streaming, with plugins for every platform. Bandicam records; it does not stream.
